During the pandemic, three East Village residents became friends while spending time with their pups at the Tompkins Square Park Dog Run. The friends, Will Kroeze, pastor at Trinity Lower East Side, Dan Hyatt, a middle school teacher, and Will Horowitz, a chef and author who co-founded Ducks Eatery and Harry & Ida’s Meat and Supply Co., bonded over a mutual interest at the intersection of food, spirituality, and community.

They have put the conversations into action, creating an old-school cookbook that will benefit Trinity Lower East Side Services and Food for the Homeless (SAFH) and its community fridge on Ninth Street and Avenue B.

Standing in the heart of the East Village for 180 years, Trinity Lower East Side Lutheran Parish has been committed to working for positive change in our community and offers radical welcome and affirmation to all who come through our doors. For decades, Trinity has been at the forefront of the movement toward greater visibility and inclusion of the queer community in the church and has used its voice and place in the community to call for justice for asylum seekers, people of all genders, the unhoused, and - most especially - the food insecure. Through Trinity’s Services and Food for the Homeless, we address the urgent needs of our neighbors facing food insecurity, welcoming all to our table where we serve over 200,000 meals each year, no questions asked. Our food pantry provides fresh, nutritious groceries to households throughout our community, and our first-of-it’s-kind College Student Pantry serves hundreds of students from throughout the city.
